Uneasy ceasefire leads to peace treaty between Beta Quadrant neighbours

BYZBAR VECTIS – Bardeezan and Byzallian officials attend a treaty signing that officially declares peace between the two planets for the first time in their troubled history.

Chief Namhug of Bardeez and Nestor Toral – representative of the Provisional National Government of Byzatium – were in attendance yesterday, along with Starfleet officials, to sign a historic treaty that officially declares peace between the two planets for the first time in their troubled history.

Ever since the Bardeezans and Byzallians were capable of space travel, the system neighbours have been at odds, with the majority of the agitation between the two peoples originating from the unchecked abduction of Bardeezan citizens by Byzallian pirates. These abductees are usually taken to be sold as slaves to replace losses from the Byzallian Dorfmen population as they, in turn, find themselves the victims of abductions from the enigmatic Omunic race that shares their home planet with them.

Two years ago, the tensions between the system neighbours erupted into all-out war, when newly elected Bardeezan Chief Fairlos Namhug declared that Bardeez would no longer merely defend its borders, instead promising to take the fight to the Byzallians.

The conflict has since taken a devastating toll on both worlds, as the Bardeezans found themselves woefully ill-equipped for battle on such a large scale, while the fractious Dorfmen were unable to fully set aside their differences to present a united front against both the Bardeezans and the continued threat of the Omunics.

“Getting the two sides to sit down and talk was actually easier than getting the Dorfmen to decide which tribe’s leader would be their representative at the negotiations.” Remarked Admiral Fitzgerald of Starfleet, who had spearheaded the Federation’s quest for peace between the two planets. “Both sides realised continuing the conflict was simply unsustainable.”

With the signing of the treaty, there is hope among Starfleet officials that the two planets will not only be able to live peacefully, side-by-side but that this momentous occasion may lead to improved relations and even perhaps joint efforts between Bardeez and Byzatium.

However, Chief Namhug was more sceptical when asked for his opinion on that possibility, saying: “It will take more than a signature on a piece of paper to convince us Bardeezans that the Byzallians are willing to cease hostilities, much less cooperate with us!” When quizzed further on what he meant by the statement, Chief Namhug simply replied: “Trust must be earned.”

Nestor Toral declined to comment.
